Mabio Costa

Born with a congenital limb defect, Mabio Costa and his family made the decision to remove his nonfunctioning foot when he was 12 years old. Amputating the foot allowed him to be fit with a higher functioning prosthetic limb. Mabio hit the ground running, and has not stopped since. He is a former member of the Brazilian Triathlon Team, and since 2001 a member of the USA Triathlon Team -- twice a Triathlon World Champion (1996 and 2004).

Mabio moved to the United States in the early 90’s to take advantage of the advances in prosthetics available here that would have cost him 20 years salary in Brazil. He became a POA patient in 2003, and we have been a proud and strong supporter of his many athletic endeavors ever since.

Mabio believes that one of the most important things in his life is to be a role model for other physically challenged people. The feeling he experiences when he shares his story, giving them hope, is greater than the joy he has while standing on top of the podium accepting an award. He also makes himself available as a motivational speaker at local schools and hospitals.

One of Mabio’s favorite quotes is by Everett Hale: “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I should do and, with the help of God, I will do!”
