Jack FarleyJack Farley's right leg was claimed by a mortar in Vietnam 40 years ago. He was fitted for his first prosthesis at Walter Reed Hospital. It was there, on a blind date, that Jack met the woman who would later become his wife. If he hadn't lost his leg, he probably wouldn't have met her. Jack also believes he would not have returned to college to study law and subsequently would not have become a federal judge. "By overcoming this (amputation) in a positive way, it actually can assist you in other challenges in life."
Over the years, Jack was fit with several types of suction sockets, with the biggest difference being the type of brim used. Quad sockets, modified quads, ischial containment - you name it, he tried it.
In 2004, Jack was introduced to Stan Patterson during a prosthetic workshop at Walter Reed Hospital, where Jack is a volunteer. He’d heard some good feedback on Stan’s new NPS socket system from renowned physical therapist and gait specialist, Bob Gailey. Jack was especially intrigued by the lower trim lines of the socket system, which would allow him to sit comfortably and bend more naturally. An admitted golf “nut,” he also thought it might help his game. Jack has been wearing the system ever since.
"Blisters, burns, itching, and pain all came and went, and came again. They all disappeared, and never returned, once I was in an AK socket using Stan's NPS vacuum-assisted suspension. It is the most comfortable socket I have ever worn." |
