Jake Bainter

Jake Bainter was involved in a riding lawnmower accident in April 2004. He was four years old at the time. The lawnmower amputated 3 toes on his right foot and left little structure remaining to his right knee and thigh. Subsequently, he spent 10 days in the hospital, enduring 10 surgeries, one every other day. Due to the complexities of the injury, Jake and his family embarked on a 4-year limb salvage effort.

“As time passed we began to face new and different challenges, including things like chronic pain and a closing growth plate,” recalls Jake’s mom, Jodi. “After 15 surgeries, Jake was growing tired of the ongoing medical procedures and we knew it was time to once again re-evaluate our options. In the end, we decided the most functional long-term choice would be to proceed with an above-the-knee amputation.”

In February 2008, Jake had surgery to remove his leg above-the-knee. He started walking on his new prosthesis in April of that year. Jodi made the following entry in her journal after Jake was fitted with his new leg. “It has been two days filled with so many emotions, but quite simply this is a day of freedom for sweet Jake. As tragic as the accident was in 2004, he is now restored and this is just the beginning. Today I am especially grateful for the team at P&O. They gave Jake a space that was comfortable and safe, and because of that he was able to thrive. These individuals are doing God’s work. Giving a child his leg again can only be classified as a miracle.”

Jake is an active and competitive 8-year-old boy. He loves animals, his favorites being reptiles/amphibians. He also is a self-proclaimed “great fisherman.” Swimming is one of his favorite sports; he is quick and agile in the water. Jake is eager to learn to ski and participate in other water sports. He is confident in his abilities, frequently challenging his classmates in the sport of their choice, and is willing to try anything.

Jake is always moving, bouncing a ball, hitting a racket, jumping, flipping…whatever the activity, he is right there. Recently, he participated in the Challenged Athletes Foundation Triathlon in San Diego, California. “His prosthetic leg has no boundaries on his abilities,” says proud mom, Jodi. And the pictures speak for themselves.
