John Wayne Walding
Staff Sergeant John W. Walding, U.S. Army, is a Special Forces sniper instructor and the first amputee to graduate from the Special Forces Sniper Course. He distinguished himself during a raid in Afghanistan on April 6, 2008. With no regard for his own safety, Sgt. Walding fought his way through gunfire for more than an hour, sustaining an injury that effectively amputated his leg below the knee. He received the Silver Star, the U.S. Military's 3rd highest combat award for his heroic actions.
